PANS/PANDAS*: these two conditions are similar with a sudden onset of motor and vocal tics, severe anxiety and/or OCD behaviors. Initially described in children, it can affect older individuals as well. These syndromes are believed to be started by an infection (such as strep throat or walking pneumonia) which causes the body to cross-react with parts of the brain causing the observed symptoms. These conditions are under intense investigation by the NIH and NIMH. It also tends to have a fluctuating course over time.
